ORBIS - Saving Sight Worldwide
ORBIS - Saving Sight Worldwide
45 million people in the world are blind. Yet 36 million of them don’t have to be.

Since 1982 ORBIS has treated more than 10 million people for blindness related diseases in 87 developing countries worldwide. This has been achieved through the teaching of sight-saving skills to more than 234,000 eye care professionals aboard the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital and in local hospitals. ORBIS also works with communities, government and hospitals to improve health care facilities and foster awareness of eye health.

ORBIS - Saving Sight in Ethiopia
Focused on one major project, ORBIS plans to eliminate a life destroying and blinding disease - Trachoma - in some of the poorest regions of southern Ethiopia, where the prevalence of Trachoma is among the highest in the world, predominantly affecting women and children. In too many countries children who are blind or visually impaired struggle in school, are unable to join the workforce or contribute to their family income and, more than often, are seen as a burden on families and society. Even more shocking is that up to half of children in developing countries, who become blind, will die within a year.

In 2007, ORBIS adopted the World Health Organisation’s SAFE strategy which involves conducting corrective Surgery, to reverse the effects of trachoma; distributing Antibiotics to treat the initial blinding infection; raising awareness of Facial cleanliness to prevent the bacteria which causes infection; and improving the surrounding Environment through improving access to clean water and sanitation.

This vision is ambitious but vital for the social and economic growth of this region. With your help, ORBIS will leave this region with the knowledge and skills so they can thrive independently and allow future generations to grow up free from the threat of blindness.
