Meningitis is a fatal disease and treatment/vaccination is the only way to cope with the emergency. MSF teams are sent into epidemic zones to limit the number of deaths and to treat people on the spot, thus helping to stop the spread of the virus. MSF has already treated more than 2 million people and around 8 million people are waiting to receive treatment.
Meningitis treatment: 1 antibiotic dose is enough in the majority of the cases, if treatment is initiated quickly after the symptoms appear. Without treatment, meningitis kills up to 50% of infected patients, and there are millions of people to protect. This is a race against time and Health Ministries in Nigeria, Niger and Chad have been mobilized and hundreds of MSF teams are helping.
